What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer.
I still hear the voice of my grandmother echoing those words in my ear. Every granddaughter thinks her grandmother is the best in the world, and rightfully so. Grandmothers hold a special place in our hearts; they are the pillars of our foundation, rearing us in the way that we should go in hopes that we never depart.
I was fortunate to have both my mother and grandmother throughout my childhood and well into adulthood. My children in turn had the same and shared that good fortune, though they were their early years. They still hold fond memories of my grandmother. She was an angel, she was magical, she was educated by life and baptised in the fire of the Holy Spirit. My grandmother planted the seeds in ME that bloomed the relationship I now have with my mother.
Growing up I never appreciated mother, after all I had my grandmother and there was no room in my heart for another. But as I found that as we mature, the chambers of our hearts grow. In our maturity we learn that love can be shared, we learn to accept and appreciate the things we cannot change. The love we share with our spouse, or our children is not the same as the love we share with our mothers and grandmothers, that love is special. This is why our hearts have four chambers I was told. One that holds our grandparent, one that holds our parents, one for our loves and the other for our children. Whether this is true or not, I don’t know. But I believe it is.
If you are fortunate enough to be celebrating this Mother’s day with your mother, consider yourself lucky; if you’re celebrating with your daughters or sons, Mother and grandmother, consider yourself exceptionally lucky. I lost my grandmother in 2002, though she has left this physical realm, I take comfort in knowing she’s in a far better place and the lessons she has instilled in me lives on, immortalised in my children, someday in their children and so on…..
I’m in Scotland and my Mom is back home in the Caribbean, though we’re miles apart, we will always be close at heart……

Also, “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” is one of my favourite hymns…and I recite…”all because we do not carry every thing to God in prayer” over and over when I need to be reminded of a way to let go, and let God. Thank you for the beautiful post. I love the hymn you quoted. So much of what we heard in childhood sticks with us in a way that is never repeated. You are so right that as we get older the chambers of our heart grow, at least if we allow ourselves to be open to it. What a blessing it is to love and be loved. Happy Mother’s day!
